How to Store Funko Pops Without Box Damage

How to Store Funko Pops Without Box Damage

That fresh Pop! box is part of the collectible. A bent corner, sun-faded window or crushed top flap can take the shine off a favourite character, whether it is a Marvel exclusive, an anime grail or the final figure needed to complete a set. Knowing how to store Funko Pops properly means protecting both the vinyl figure and the packaging while keeping your collection ready to enjoy.

The best setup depends on one big choice: are you collecting to display, to preserve pristine boxes, or a bit of both? There is no single right answer. The goal is to give each Pop! a clean, stable home that suits your space, your budget and the way you collect.

How to Store Funko Pops in Their Boxes

For boxed collectors, the box is not just packaging. It carries the figure number, character artwork, edition details and the clean condition that many collectors look for. Start by keeping Pops upright, exactly as they were designed to sit. Laying boxes on their backs is not automatically disastrous, but it makes crushing more likely when other boxes are placed on top.

Avoid building very tall stacks. A couple of lightweight standard-size Pops can be fine for short-term storage, but large stacks put pressure on the lower boxes and can bow their lids over time. Deluxe, Movie Moments and oversized Pop! boxes need even more care because their larger windows and wider tops can flex more easily.

Put your most valued figures in fitted plastic protectors. Soft protectors are an affordable everyday option for standard Pops and help guard against dust, shelf scuffs and light knocks. Hard cases offer stronger protection for rarer pieces, signed Pops, convention exclusives or figures you may want to keep in near-mint condition. Choose protectors made for the correct box format rather than forcing a box into one that is too tight.

Before placing a Pop! in a protector, check that the box is fully dry and free from loose debris. Trapping dust or moisture inside defeats the point. Slide it in carefully rather than pushing on the plastic window, then close the protector without creasing the cardboard tabs.

Keep Sunlight, Heat and Damp Away

The biggest threats to a Funko Pop! collection are usually found in ordinary rooms, not in dramatic accidents. Direct sunlight can fade printed box colours and may discolour vinyl over time. A bright windowsill might look brilliant for a photo, but it is a poor long-term display spot.

Heat is another problem. Do not store figures beside a radiator, boiler cupboard, fireplace or heat-producing electronics. High temperatures can soften vinyl, affect adhesives and encourage box warping. A conservatory, loft or garage may be convenient, but UK weather makes these spaces risky unless they are dry, insulated and temperature-controlled.

Damp deserves serious attention. Cardboard absorbs moisture, and a slightly humid room can lead to wavy panels, soft corners and musty odours. Keep your Pops away from external walls that regularly feel cold or damp. If you use a storage cupboard or sealed plastic crate, add silica gel packets and replace them when needed. They are a simple extra layer of defence, especially through wetter months.

A cool, dry room with steady conditions is ideal. You do not need museum-grade climate control for every common release, but you do need to avoid extremes. A bedroom shelving unit or a clean home office cupboard will usually beat a shed every time.

Choose Shelves Before Storage Boxes

A shelf display is often the best answer for collectors who want to see their figures daily. It keeps boxes upright, makes it easier to track what you own and stops forgotten Pops from sitting beneath a heavy pile. Pick sturdy shelving with enough depth for the box size, including protectors if you use them.

Leave a little breathing room around each box. Packing every shelf edge-to-edge can look impressive, but removing one Pop! often turns into a risky game of tugging cardboard from cardboard. A small gap helps prevent rubbed corners and gives you room to lift figures from the base.

For a cleaner collector display, organise by franchise, series number, character type or colour scheme. A full One Piece crew, a run of Dragon Ball transformations or a Marvel shelf arranged by team can turn individual purchases into a proper collection. Keep heavier deluxe boxes on lower shelves, where they are less likely to fall and less likely to strain a lighter shelf.

If your space is limited, storage boxes are useful, but use them properly. Choose clean, rigid plastic boxes with secure lids rather than thin cardboard moving boxes. Line the base with acid-free tissue paper or plain, clean paper if boxes can shift during transport. Store Pops upright in a single layer where possible. If you must create a second layer, place a firm sheet of cardboard or foam board between them so weight is spread evenly, and never overfill the container.

Storing Out-of-Box Funko Pops

Taking a Pop! out of the box is not wrong. Plenty of collectors prefer the full sculpt, want a more dramatic display, or simply have no room for rows of packaging. If that is your style, keep the box and insert flat-packed only if you can do so without damaging them. For many collectors, retaining the original box still gives future flexibility.

Out-of-box figures should be displayed away from sunlight and dust. Acrylic display cases, glass-fronted cabinets and enclosed shelving work especially well. They keep figures visible while reducing cleaning time. Open shelves are fine too, but expect to dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth or a clean make-up brush for detailed areas.

Never scrub a vinyl figure with harsh household cleaners. If there is a mark, start gently with a lightly damp cloth and dry it immediately. Paint applications and finishes can vary, so aggressive cleaning can cause more damage than the dust ever would.

Keep accessories, stands and small detachable pieces together. A labelled compartment box is useful for figures with weapons, masks, alternate heads or display bases. There is nothing more frustrating than finding a figure years later and realising one tiny accessory has vanished into the back of a drawer.

Pack Pops Safely for Moving or Posting

Moving house, reorganising a collection room or sending a Pop! to a friend calls for more protection than normal shelf storage. Put boxed figures in protectors first if possible, then wrap each one in a layer of bubble wrap. Place them upright in a strong double-walled box and fill empty spaces with packing paper so nothing shifts.

Do not use packing tape directly on a Funko box or a protector. Tape residue and torn print are painful avoidable damage. Label boxes by franchise or room, and write “This Way Up” on the outer carton. It may not guarantee careful handling, but it helps you unpack in the right order and keeps heavy items away from your most fragile boxes.

For an oversized Pop!, choose a carton with room for protective padding on every side. A tight-fitting shipping box can transfer every knock straight into the corners. The extra space is worth it when the item is a Collector’s Dream piece you have waited ages to add.

Build a Storage Routine That Works

Collections grow quickly, particularly when a new wave lands or a Funko Pop of the Week catches your eye. A simple routine prevents the collection becoming a wall of boxes you are afraid to touch. Every few months, inspect shelves for dust, signs of fading, bowed boxes or moisture. Rotate figures that sit closest to a window, and make sure no stack has started to lean.

It also helps to keep a basic inventory on your phone or in a notebook. Record the character, franchise, edition, purchase date and where it is stored. This is handy when you are avoiding duplicates, planning a themed display or checking what needs extra protection. For higher-value pieces, photographs of the box condition can be worthwhile too.

Buy protectors and cases according to value and risk, not just because every Pop! needs the same treatment. A common figure on a safe shelf may only need a soft protector, while a signed exclusive or favourite limited release earns the hard case. Spend where it makes the most sense for your collection.

Your collection should feel exciting every time you look at it, not like a row of fragile parcels waiting for an accident. Give each Pop! a dry, shaded and secure place, then leave enough room for the next character that absolutely has to join the shelf.
